Hot red lights that declared "This is not a brothel" set the stage for an intimate night at ELLE Music x Style, the inaugural event in a new series from ELLE. In the heat of New York Fashion Week, a power crowd of fashion bloggers and music  fans were drawn to Mister H at Mondrian Soho. DJ Mia Moretti kicked off the night with a playlist of '90s tunes (so if you thought you heard strains of a hundred people singing "Lovefool" by The Cardigans, you did) reigning over the turntables in a jeweled headpiece from The Prancing Fox and a vintage striped silk jumpsuit. She also made one partygoer's day when she announced the winner of sponsor Diet Coke's VIP concert experience, and a private meet-and-greet with the evening's. While the party was kicking off, we snuck behind a false, rotating bookshelf into the Mondrian's private dining room to chat with Birch, a soulful young Brooklyn songstress ready to debut her rocker edge when her second album drops on October 15.

"I was inspired by a lot of strong women: Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Tina Turner, and Cyndi Lauper," Birch said. "I was writing a record thinking, 'How will this sound in an arena?'"
As the pianist has been snapped for street by names like Garance Doré, she weighed in on the intersection of music and style: "My general go-to when I can't figure it out is this KMFDM T-shirt that I wear to bed and pretty much live in," she noted. "I love minimal fashion, early '90s, long skirts, and blazers."
She also sported a sparkly new toy from sponsor Raymond Weil, a 35mm diamond-faced Jasmine watch that she dressed down with a hammered brass cuff bracelet. While Birch joked that it would be her secret weapon for getting to shows on time, she also has another performance secret: a spritz of perfume to make her feel at home onstage. "Right now I'm wearing Frédéric Malle En Passant, which I love, and I've been really into Serge Lutens Majestic Rose. I'm a total perfume snob." Could this be the singer that produces a perfume we'd actually want to wear? Let's hope.
